Lifelong learning is important for leaders! One of the pillars of SHRM is "Develop the Professional”. At Richmond SHRM, we take this concept very seriously. Our HR JAM Session Committee (formerly COIN) is responsible for arranging and producing stimulating, informal learning sessions focused on a pre-determined "hot topic” in the HR world. These informal events should also promote networking.

Number of volunteers needed 12
Reports to VP, Professional Advancement (Board position) via HR JAM Session Committee Chair

Skills Developed HR knowledge, leadership, teamwork, organization, coordination, networking
 Approx. Hours per Month  2.33
 Annual Hours

Quarterly Planning Sessions: 4 (1 hour per quarter)

Sessions for which you are responsible: 12 (4 hours per session including attendance)

Assistance with HR JAM Sessions not assigned to you: 8 (includes attendance of some sessions and any other assistance)

Various conference calls or ad hoc meetings: 4 (allows for 1 hour per quarter)

Richmond SHRM conducts monthly HR JAM Session events at local Greater Richmond restaurants that can accommodate the event. A "hot” HR topic or question is announced and publicized ahead of time, members sign up to attend. Registration is limited to the number of people that the venue can accommodate.

This Committee typically meets briefly each quarter to plan topic selection for the following quarter. Flexibility is key as "hot” HR topics can evolve throughout the year.

The 12 HR JAM Session Committee members will divide into 4 teams. Each team will plan 3 COIN events, one for each month of the quarter OR one event per quarter, whichever method the Committee selects. Each team will arrange, announce, publicize, and host COIN events for which they are responsible. Similar to an organized book club event, the Committee Team hosts should prepare a list of points or sub-questions on the topic to prompt discussion.

You will also participate in any required follow up afterward such as a Committee debrief.

You may be asked to assist other HR JAM Session Committee teams also working to bring exceptional learning opportunities to Richmond SHRM members.
