President
Eva Hartmann, GPHR, SHRM-SCP


Eva has 20 years of experience as a strategic, results-driven and innovative leader with significant expertise in Human Resources strategy, talent and leadership development, performance management, and organizational transformation. Eva has worked in a variety of industries, from manufacturing to Fortune 500 consulting. She is a transformational change agent who has developed and led strategic human capital programs and talent initiatives in multiple challenging environments globally.

 

Eva is the Chief Human Resources Officer for Schnabel Engineering, an award-winning engineering consulting firm. She is also the founder and President of Trellis LLC, a Human Capital Consulting and Staffing firm. Prior to Trellis, Eva was the Global Human Resources Director for Tredegar Film Products, a global manufacturer of plastic film products, and was responsible for the HR Strategy and Operations of a $600 million global division.

 

Eva holds an MBA from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, VA and a BA in Anthropology from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. She is an Adjunct Faculty member with the University of Richmond Robins School of Business, teaching Organizational Behavior to MBA students.

Pamela Bradley


Pamela Bradley is a Human Resources Manager at Keiter CPAs, responsible for driving Keiter’s Learning and Organizational Development Program. In her current role, Pamela builds and manages the Succession Planning, Executive Performance and Compensation, and Performance Management processes. She developed an award-winning program on Business Networking Skills, and launched an executive coaching program at the Firm. Pamela has co-authored the article “Raising Rainmakers” for the Journal of Accountancy, and regularly speaks to groups on the topic of business etiquette. Prior to joining Keiter, Pamela was an accountant at Circuit City Stores. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of Virginia, and a Master’s degree in Human Resources Development from The George Washington University.

Gretchen Flynn Morris, GPHR, SHRM-SCP

 

Gretchen Flynn Morris is an Instructor and the Director of Strategic Management for Academic Programs for the University of Richmond’s School of Professional and Continuing Studies. In addition to her administrative role, she teaches undergraduate courses in Human Resource Management, International HR and Global Leadership. Prior to her current role, she served as Interim Undergraduate Chair and the Director of the Human Resource Management Academic programs.

Before moving to the University of Richmond, Gretchen held various HR management roles including HR Director for Springbok Services and Senior Manager roles in corporate and International HR for Teletech Corporation. Gretchen has been an active member of Richmond SHRM since 2008 and served on the Board of Directors as the Director of Business Partnerships and as the VP for Professional Advancement. Gretchen is a graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman’s College and earned her International MBA from the University of Denver. She is SHRM-SCP certified and is also certified as a Global Professional in HR through HRCI.


First Vice President
Carol Ann Lawson, MS, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

 

Carol Ann has held human resources roles at Virginia Commonwealth University since 2008. Currently, she is the Talent Acquisition Program Director in VCU Human Resources. In this newly created role, Carol Ann leads efforts to discover, design and execute a VCU talent acquisition function that is fully responsive to customer needs, including building out an executive search function; development and delivery of search committee training; and thought and project leadership for refinement of VCU employment brand. .Prior to this role, she served as the Executive Director of Human Resources for the VCU Health Sciences campus, where she managed and oversaw recruitment, compensation, employee relations, and other HR functions for the Health Sciences campus. Carol Ann has been very involved in Richmond SHRM and has led the HR Strategic Impact Award Committee. Carol Ann holds a BS in Sociology with a minor in Psychology from VCU, and an MS in Business with a Concentration in HR Management from VCU.

Rachel Griggs, CPA

 

Rachel Griggs, CPA, has over eight years of experience providing clients with accounting and auditing services. She has spent those years at Cherry Bekaert LLP where she currently works as an Audit Manager in the Richmond Practice. Rachel serves clients in multiple industries, with a main focus on employee benefit plans and real estate. She holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Accounting from James Madison University. Rachel also serves on the Junior Achievement Young Professionals Board.


Director - Diversity & Inclusion
Teri Miles


Teri Miles is a Compliance Manager with Altria Client Services responsible for internal compliance investigations, reporting and analysis across all the Altria Companies. Previously, she was with the Office of the Virginia Attorney General and prior to that, at Circuit City as Manager of Labor and Employment. Teri received her J.D. from the University of Richmond Law School and her undergraduate degree from Mary Washington College. She is a longtime member of Richmond SRHM, graduate of Leadership Metro Richmond, former past president of the MRWBA, past Chair of the READ Center, Chair of the 59th Book & Author Dinner for the Junior League of Richmond, and a former vice president and board member of SPARC.

Director - Diversity & Inclusion
Danielle Gilbert, SHRM-CP, PHR


Danielle Gilbert is the founder and CEO of Manifest In You Consulting LLC, a SWaM, HRCI and SHRM certified woman owned small business that offers management consulting solutions to small and medium sized employers. Danielle was previously the Administrative Director for St. Francis Medical Center Hospital of Bon Secours Health System, Inc. Her experience over the past fifteen years in Human Resources has included Consulting, Employee Relations, Compensation, Benefits, Entrepreneurship and Recruitment.

Gilbert holds a BS in Business Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University, and two masters in Human Resources Management and Public Administration from Strayer University. She has certifications from HRCI (PHR) and from SHRM (SHRM-CP). Gilbert is currently pursuing her Ph.D.

Director - Strategic Alliances
Denise Laman

Denise Laman, Managing Principal at Collam Consulting, LLC, uses her 25+ years of experience in strategic planning, change management, process improvement, and talent/workforce planning to help organizations and people overcome their operational and situational challenges. She is energized by working collaboratively with businesses, organizations, and individuals to create positive change.


As regional Economic Liaison for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Denise was responsible for strategic community outreach and engagement with employers, educators, government and community service organizations to build an integrated network of support for hiring transitioning Service members, Veterans and their families. She continues this talent/workforce effort, staying active in the RVA community in the areas of workforce and community engagement with non-profits, employers, educational and government organizations. She holds a BS in Industrial Engineering & Operations Research from Virginia Tech and a Masters in Systems Engineering from UVA.


Director - RVA Leadership
Bryan Chenault, SHRM-CP, PHR


Bryan Chenault is the Director of Human Resources at Whitlock. Over the last seven years, he has moved Whitlock’s HR function from a two person administrative team to a full strategic arm of the organization providing both services and counsel to employees, managers and executives. As part of this evolution, Bryan introduced programs for employee appreciation, employee development, and employee retention and has created numerous internal training plans and programs for leaders. He completed his undergraduate work at Pensacola Christian College and completed his MBA in 2010 at Liberty University. Bryan is active in several local groups around development including the local ATD chapter where he leads the Leadership group, and is actively involved in Richmond’s Talent Management Forum and the Council of HR Executives. He has also been a member of RSHRM’s Strategic Impact Award since 2016. His passion is helping people, teams and organizations achieve their full potential.


Director - Legislative Affairs
Karen Elliott, Esq.

 

Karen Elliott is a partner with Eckert Seamans, Cherin & Mellott where she leads the firm’s Virginia employment practice. She works with clients of all sizes, from start-ups to the Fortune 1,000 in industries ranging from nursing homes, physician practices and health and rehab centers to travel and entertainment, fast food and retail. She counsels and represents clients in investigation and defense of EEOC, DOL and NLRB charges, drafting of employment contracts, handbooks and drug policies, providing coaching for terminations and management training for litigation and union avoidance. She works closely with clients to determine proper classification under the wage and hour laws, and well as whether or not the client’s independent contractor arrangements meet state and federal guidelines. She also advises clients and litigates issues relating to the numerous federal and state employment laws including Americans with Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act and unemployment issues. In response to the #metoo movement Karen has developed unique non-harassment training designed to engage companies in a collaborative responsibility process. She has been engaged to provide this training to major companies both within and outside of Virginia.

Sumi Lanneau, SHRM-CP


Sumi Lanneau is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with an undergraduate degree in Information Systems and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Human Resource Management. After several years in the professional roles she pursued her Master in Human Resource Management from the University of Richmond. As her career moved forward, Sumi earned the Strategic Workforce Planning (SWP) designation from Human Capital Institute, Strategic HR Business Partner (sHRBP) from Human Capital Institute and the SHRM Certified Professional designation (SHRM-CP) through SHRM. She has progressed through her career in a variety of roles marrying her IT and HR knowledge together. She has worked for the Commonwealth of Virginia, Dominion, Federal Reserve Bank in a variety of roles ranging from analyst to director levels. Sumi's current role is with the Department of Human Resource Management for the Commonwealth as a Senior Talent Management Consultant. Sumi married her college sweetheart and is the proud mother of two sons. She enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Kelsey Thayer


Kelsey Thayer is the Human Resources Manager at The Frontier Project, where her focus and passion is to create cultures that empower employees to thrive. She has been in HR for five years, and previously worked in the field of risk management consulting. As a “department of one”, Kelsey enjoys connecting with fellow solo HR managers, and always looks for ways to support one another in those roles.

Kelsey holds a Master’s in Human Resources Management from the University of Richmond, and an undergraduate degree from the University of Massachusetts in Political Science and Communications.

Julie Vargo


Julie Vargo is a is a two-time alumna from VCU. Her post-baccalaureate degree is in Human Resource Management. She has worked in the Human Services and Accounting fields during her career. Over the past six years she has held positions of increasing authority while working as an HR Generalist. As a Change Agent she sees issues as opportunities and is always working to improve efficiencies and productivity through new development strategies. Julie recently joined Stiles Ewing Powers as their Firm Administrator where she handles all facets of business administration for the family law firm.

Stephanie Dixon, SHRM-SCP, SPHR


Stephanie Dixon joined Bon Secours Mercy Health in 2014 and currently serves as Human Resources Director. In this role, she is responsible for employee relations, business partnership, change management, organizational design, and talent development. Stephanie has over 10 years of combined Human Resources and Operations experience in the areas of recruitment, compensation, benefits management, HR compliance, employee relations, HRIS, employee wellness, process improvement, project and operations management.

Stephanie earned a BS in Business Management with a specialization in International Business from Old Dominion University. In her studies she traveled to South Korea, China, and Japan. Stephanie also earned a MS in Human Resource Management from University of Richmond.


Director - Professional Development & Certification
Christina Smith, SHRM-SCP

Christina Smith, SHRM-SCP is HR Administrator for Chesterfield Fire and Emergency Service (CFEMS) where she manages and provides leadership to a highly dedicated HR team and oversees all human resource related programs and projects. Prior to joining CFEMS in 2016, she served the men and women of Henrico Fire Department, Richmond Police, Emergency Communications and Fire Departments in roles that included: Personnel Officer, Recruiter, HR Consultant and Action Officer. Christina’s experience includes volunteer EMS experience with Forest View Volunteer Rescue Squad and Piedmont Search and Rescue. She served in the U.S. Army Reserves as an Intelligence Analyst. Christina earned a BAS in Human Resource Management from the University of Richmond and a MBA from Averett University. She is an active member of Richmond SHRM where she chaired the 2018 Strategic Leadership Conference (SLC) and co-chaired the SLC in 2017. Christina currently serves on the Chesterfield County Diversity Committee and the VA Office of EMS Workforce Development Committee.

Director - Collaborative and E-Learning
Grey Martin, SHRM-SCP, SPHR

Grey Martin is founder and managing director of Ballast HR, Inc., an HR consulting firm specializing in human capital management and support function design and implementation. She has over 10 years of management and strategic communications experience across myriad industries – from a non-profit pension and benefits administrator to healthcare systems to a global entertainment company.

Prior to Ballast HR, Grey was a consultant with ScottMadden where her work focused within the Corporate and Shared Services space. Grey’s experience includes HR service delivery implementation, policy development, business training development, process optimization and redesign, human capital management and analytics, and project and change management. Grey earned her M.B.A., with an emphasis on management consulting, from the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School and a B.A. in English from The University of the South, Sewanee. She is also SPHR certified.


Director - Mentorship
Candice Hunter, Ph.D., MBA, SPHR


Dr. Candice Hunter is a business psychologist, human resources leader, and educator. She has spent her career serving in leadership roles that include human resources and human capital strategy management, HR technology transformation, inclusion & equity education, and leadership development.

Candice currently leads the human resources transformation efforts at CampusWorks, a private boutique firm. Prior to Campus Works, she was the Chief of Staff and Chief HR Officer of Richmond Public Schools. Dr. Hunter has a passion for teaching and transferring knowledge and is a current adjunct faculty member at the University of Richmond in the Master of Human Resources program. She was a content writer for the aPHR, PHR, and SPHR examinations on behalf of the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI) and serves as the Certifications Lead with Richmond SHRM.

Locally, she is an active volunteer with several organizations dedicated to improving the lives of citizens in her community. Candice earned her Ph.D. in Business Psychology from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, an executive MBA from Florida International University, and a Bachelor of Psychology degree from The George Washington University. She has two children which are the pride and joy of her life.

Mel Smith


Mel Smith Jr. serves as Director or Diversity and Inclusion at Genworth. As Genworth’s chief diversity officer, Mel leads and coordinates efforts to create and sustain a diverse, inclusive and welcoming environment for all Genworth employees including consultants, suppliers and customers. Mel’s goal is to make diversity & inclusion Genworth’s way of doing business. His vision is to advance a culture of belonging where open hearts and minds combine to unleash the potential of the brilliant mix of people in every corner of Genworth.

Since beginning this role, he has launched a major “Respect in the Workplace” initiative aimed at arming every employee with the proper tools and information to help Genworth become a diverse and inclusive community. He has partnered with organizations who are in the forefront of D&I, reaching out to the major strategic development companies to ensure a comprehensive D&I environment. Mel has made recruitment a major component of his strategy, enlisting resources that have proven success in creating diverse workforces. His overall goal is to bake D&I into everything Genworth does.
