What’s the secret to driving lasting social change? You may be surprised to learn that analytics is at the core. Data-driven practices and programs hold great promise as a means for making progress against seemingly intractable social problems. But ultimately they will work only when community members are able to engage directly in the change effort as leaders and partners. Using data from recent initiatives, hear how community engagement can achieve real change in people’s lives—especially in the lives of the most vulnerable members of a community. Given persistently limited budgets, today’s leaders are challenged to direct funds to programs and initiatives that use data to show that they are achieving impact. Melody Barnes knows a thing or two about public policy and social change. In the Obama administration she served as Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. Too often, efforts at diversity are foiled simply because the work begins too late, at entry to advanced education, or at the employment stage. By giving our support to early schooling, by leavening the disparities in public education, by financially getting behind proven non-profits working in underserved communities we can continue the vital work of diversity. And by committing ourselves to participating in the lives of our neighbor’s children – by expanding what the word neighbor means – we can grow the population of citizens trained and prepared to take advantage of opportunities which may be out of reach. Writer David Robbins has used his craft – fourteen novels, four plays, multiple essays – as well as his volunteer efforts in RVA to promote inclusion. Pay Equity: New Pressures, New Strategies

Pay equity—the notion that pay levels should be equitable for all employees regardless of their demographic background—is top of mind for many organizations. Interest in this topic has reached new levels, as exemplified in recent efforts by organizations to publicly discuss and disclose their achievement on pay equity (e.g., difference in pay between women and men in term of cents on the dollar). Activist investors are pressing for this information and leading companies are looking to get out ahead of such demands. During the session, participants will learn about measuring, driving, and communicating pay equity, as well as steps to take to prevent pay gaps
