Nominate Region's Best Places to Work

By Gregory J. Gilligan
Richmond Times-Dispatch

Which Richmond-area employer encourages community involvement, promotes diversity and supports employee development?

Which workplace in the region has the most engaged employees?

The Richmond Times-Dispatch is searching to find the best places to work in the Richmond region for its third annual Top Workplaces program.

But we need to know which area employers - private, public, government and nonprofit - create an environment where workers are engaged, have bosses who appreciate them, enjoy doing meaningful work and feel respected and rewarded.

Nominations may be made at www.Richmond.com/Top-Workplaces or (804) 977-9367. The deadline is Oct. 23.

All types of businesses, from law firms, retailers, banks, manufacturers, hospitals to Fortune 500 companies, can be considered as long as they have at least 35 employees.

Anyone can nominate a business.

The nominations go to Workplace Dynamics LLC, a suburban Philadelphia-based company that is partnering with The Times-Dispatch on the Top Workplaces program. The company has conducted workplace surveys for dozens of other newspapers across the country.

Workplace Dynamics will survey employers and employees about numerous topics affecting their workplace life, from pay and benefits to training and work-life balance.

The Times-Dispatch along with Richmond SHRM, a chapter of the national Society for Human Resource Management, will honor the Top Workplaces companies by presenting the Sterling Workplace Awards in May to shine the light on the top businesses in each size category.

The employers also will be recognized in a Top Workplaces special section.

Sixty companies were recognized this past May at the Sterling Workplace Awards ceremony.

At that program, the awards were based on company size: mega (1,000-plus employees); large (400-999); midsize (125 to 399); and small (124 or fewer). Five companies were finalists in each of the mega and large categories, 10 businesses were finalists in the midsize category and 40 firms were in the small category.

The first-place winners for 2015 in their respective categories - and named the Sterling Workplace Award winner - were automotive retailer CarMax Inc.; real estate firm Long & Foster; appliance maker Hamilton Beach Brands Inc.; and the Shaheen Law Firm.
