Member Spotlight:  Meet Julie Vargo

Julie Vargo
Richmond SHRM Volunteer

Committee on which she volunteers:
Originally, I was invited to be on the Learning Events Committee and the New Member Engagement Committee, but realized I had to choose just one to be effective. I am an Ambassador for Richmond SHRM and am now presenting the New Member Orientation’s six times a year. If you haven’t had a chance to attend, please do. We’d love to see you there!

Her favorite thing about volunteering:  Networking
and getting to know Richmond SHRM members, friends, employees, and the board of directors. I also enjoy the companionship and support of other Human Resource Professionals, Workforce Development and Economic Development professionals.

Her day job:  I am the Human Resources Manager for Trolley House Refreshments and Groovin’ Gourmets. We are food and beverage hospitality and are an employee benefit. We work to create and nurture enduring relationships by conveniently fueling mind, body and soul.

Best movie:
Over the holidays I saw Star Wars: The Last Jedi. I know there are a lot of critics, but I loved it. I am not a die-hard Star Wars fan, but I love Sci-Fi and spaceships and therefore found it entertaining.

Favorite Richmond restaurant:  A few favorites are Tazza, Kitchen 64, The Savory Grain, Addis, and Julep’s.

Her other interests:
I love to garden and cook. Outside of work, being creative and designing is a great mental break from day to day challenges. And yoga...I do a lot of yoga. Namaste.

A Conversation with Melody Barnes

What’s the secret to driving lasting social change? You may be surprised to learn that analytics is at the core. Data-driven practices and programs hold great promise as a means for making progress against seemingly intractable social problems. But ultimately they will work only when community members are able to engage directly in the change effort as leaders and partners. Using data from recent initiatives, hear how community engagement can achieve real change in people’s lives—especially in the lives of the most vulnerable members of a community. You will leave this session inspired and challenged to do your part in making our community stronger.
