Summary

Scott Wayne will provide an understanding of the danger of fixed perspectives and the power of being able to "see the other side" to create opportunities and move forward on contentious issues.

As psychologists have taught us with the use of optical illusions, two people can interpret a single image differently depending on where they sit. The same goes for forming opinions on the same issue – we all have biases that influence how we interpret various pieces of information. How we see a set of facts determines what we glean from those facts.

While there aren't "alt-facts," there are "alt-perspectives.” Scott will walk us through the science of biases and how we naturally see what we seek. He will identify the risk in our declining ability to empathize with those who don't share our views and break down the risks of the digital stacks and bubbles we increasingly live in.

From there, he will flip to solutions and work through a series of practices to develop our empathetic talents and techniques to see problems, issues, and people from multiple perspectives.

On stage, Scott's talks bring to life strategies and tactics that he and his teams use every day. He illustrates how to blend negotiation theory, behavioral economics, and diplomatic tradecraft to disrupt markets and deliver rapid growth. Scott weaves in relevant and resonant examples from current events to reinforce concepts. Case studies cut across business trends, social issues, and economic challenges.

The formal stuff... Scott holds degrees in international relations from the London School of Economics and Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service. He worked as a British diplomat under Tony Blair's government. He has founded several companies, winning recognition on the Inc. 5000 list of fast-growth companies as well as Outside Magazine’s Top 100 Places in the US to work. He regularly speaks at international conferences as well as executive retreats for many Global 500 companies. He has moderated summits on behalf of government agencies, international organizations, central bank presidents, and Supreme Court justices.

Scott is the author of The Cartography of Negotiation, a field guide to the subject. This latest series of talks is the foundation of his next book, to be published early next year.
