2018 Legal UpdateFebruary 13
Early Bird Rate Ends December 31

In this one-day crash course, we’ll cover all the hot topics you need to protect your organization like Pay Equity.  Pay equality has become a hot-button issue in recent years at both the state and federal level. In 2016, the EEOC announced that pay equity was one of its six enforcement priorities for the next five years and it has brought more than a dozen federal Equal Pay Act cases in the last year. Several states have either adopted or enhanced their pay equity state law provisions. In addition, pay equity issues can lead to costly class action suits. This session will focus on the elements of a pay equity claim, employer defenses, and practical recommendations to avoid pay equity issues in the workplace.

This topic will be presented by Littler.

Vice President of Workforce Development & Credential Attainment

It may surprise even SRHM members to know that the fastest growing credentials in postsecondary education and training are industry certifications and occupational licenses.  Issued by a company, industry or trade association, workforce credentials verify an individual’s knowledge and skills relevant to a specific job role or occupation.  Workforce credentials benefit job seekers as they are industry recognized, portable, and stackable, meaning that these credentials can be part of a stepping stone to career development that begins with an entry level, industry recognized certification that provides access to a high growth occupation, but can also be a jumpstart to attaining a higher level credential such as a registered apprenticeship or a college degree.  Benefits to job seekers of attaining an industry driven certification or state occupational license include higher levels of employment and higher wages.

Increasing attainment, by Virginians, of workforce credentials may be crucial to filling the 175,000 job vacancies annually in Virginia that, according to research supported by Capital One, require a certification or license.  Last year, these unfilled jobs paid an average of $28 an hour or more than $58,000 a year and yet they each sat vacant for nearly a month, at a cost to the state of more than $1 billion in wages, because industries advertising these jobs...read on.
