Summary

Richmond SHRM and the Virginia Business Leadership Network proudly partner to welcome experienced designer and advocate, Kelly Hickok, as a speaker for this program.  Kelly, who is Community Resources Manager for the Center for Independent Living, Inc., will give timely information on the ADA, local agencies, adaptive equipment, and universal design. 

 

Kelly has enjoyed a 30-year career working for employers who could see her abilities. She will share her personal experiences and practical solutions to the interactive process, an informal practice in which the covered individual and the employer determine the precise limitations created by the disability and how best to respond to the need for reasonable accommodation. Kelly provides the unique perspectives of both employee and employer. She will discuss pre- and post-employment do's and don'ts, understanding employee ideas for specific accommodations, and steps to a successful interactive process.

Kelly is a member of the Mid-Atlantic ADA Leadership Network (ADA-LN), a group of qualified trainers conducting ADA training throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Mid-Atlantic ADA Center provides valuable resources for employers. Private businesses, individuals with disabilities, employers, architects, local government representatives, and other interested parties can call for guidance and information on what is required, who is covered, and how to work through a disability-related question. The Mid-Atlantic ADA Center also provides free or low-cost training programs to help employers, service providers and businesses understand and comply with the ADA.

Kelly Hickok

Kelly Hickok is the Community Services Manager for Resources for Independent Living, Inc., a private, non-profit, non-residential organization serving individuals with disabilities in Richmond, surrounding counties and the tri-cities.

Kelly has a degree in Architectural Drafting and Design and Construction Management which allowed her to work with design/build professionals directing numerous projects related to Architectural Accessibility, Universal Design and the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) for the first twenty years of her career.

Since joining Resources for Independent Living in 2004, Kelly, has served on numerous Boards and Commissions of the Commonwealth, to advise, advocate and impact systems change in all aspect of community living for individuals with disabilities.

Kelly served eight years on the Virginia Board for People with Disabilities (VBPD) and currently, on the Community Integration Advisory Commission (CIAC) to provide input to the Governor on issues impacting the lives of individuals with disabilities.

Most recently, Kelly has joined the National ADA Leadership Network after completing an in depth “Train the Trainer” course offered to fewer than 100 ADA consultants nationwide.

Feeling strongly that education and awareness are key to inclusion and expansion of community living options, Kelly has spoken to over (400) businesses and organizations in the Commonwealth. She has been featured in design articles/magazines, webinars, and several local talk shows.
