A Note from the Presidentby: Missie Murdock, SPHR
Job Market Still Tight Although U.S. employment numbers showed a positive gain in November 2011, we all know that with a reported unemployment rate of 8.5%, there are many job seekers still out there. That 8.5% doesn’t include the many unemployed workers who have given up the search. Nor does it include workers who consider themselves “under-employed” – those workers who have accepted jobs not equivalent to their skill sets, experience, and education just to have an income, albeit a lower income. While Virginia workers fared a little better in November at a seasonally adjusted 6.2%, it’s still considered an employer’s market. As of January 10, 2012, Richmond city has an 8.6% unemployment with the surrounding counties under 6%. Richmond metropolitan area data shows almost 21,000 jobs listed and almost triple the number of active job seekers. So what is the unemployed worker to do? more Legal Update - Issues Impacting

Sponsor and exhibitor space still available Richmond SHRM Employer All Star Awards Thirteen Years and Growing!by: Ken Robertson, SPHR The Employer All Star Awards (EASA) is entering its fourteenth year! We have watched continued success and growth of the EASA program over the last thirteen years. EASA has evolved into a premier breakfast awards event, celebrating award winners and finalists in a variety of categories. EASA categories include the Employer of Choice, Employee Engagement, Community Involvement, Workforce Development, Diversity Excellence, and the National Sloan Foundation Awards for Workplace Flexibility. Due to the tremendous success and continued growth of EASA, a Task Force formed last year to review the award categories and processes of the program. Bob Kelley and Thomas Quinton, from Pure Culture and Media Pond, volunteered to undertake the process of designing a questionnaire and interviewing representatives from past Richmond area participating organizations, non-participating organizations, and other SHRM Chapters who have similar awards programs. The Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce and other respected awards programs in the Richmond area were also included in the interview process. more HR Strategist of the Yearby: Ken Robertson, SPHR The Richmond SHRM HR Strategist of the Year Committee will meet soon, to plan the many activities that culminate with presenting the 2012 HR Strategist of the Year Awards at the Richmond SHRM Strategic Conference this fall. The winner will receive a $2,500 scholarship to continue their own development in the area of HR strategy. As an HR professional, you know how hard it is to be strategic. Yet some of our colleagues are able to do just that. These are just the kind of strategic thinkers who are able to implement strategic objectives that you should consider nominating for the 2012 Virginia HR Strategist of the Year Award, sponsored by Richmond SHRM and the Titan Group. The Committee streamlined the nomination process in 2011. This year nominations are due by June 1, 2012, so please start thinking who you can nominate. more |
